The Elemosanyin farmland in Ipokia

Ipokia town

  • That large parcel of land where polytechnic school is now established was formerly allocated to Elemosanyin Afonja, by the Ipokia Oba-in-council for farming purposes. This was done to compensate him for the prompt action he took when large volume water from lgbomomi running towards Ipokia town to destroy it.
  •
  •  This is how it was done;
  •  Once upon a time two strangers from came to visit Ipokia, husband and wife, during the reign of Oba Onigbale I (Oba Abinu wole bi aira).  The name of the husband is Seleru while his wife name is Abeji. They professed to be magician who came to visit the Oba for a few days. The Oba offered them a house, but they choose ti stay at the edge of the bush near the farms.

  • The story was told that the husband turned into a large mass of water that surrounded the village, destroyed crops and prevented the farmers from using their land. The people of Ipokia were put into confusion and the Oba called for assistance from Elemosanyin Afonja who used his magical power to direct the water to another route through Jangbara and many other places like Bawe Hundo, Itoun, Badagry, Ere, Lagos up to Port- Novo and finally to the gulf of guinea.

  •  Furthermore, the place where Osa river emerged is still worshipped in over town till date. During the Osa river worship, Ado-Odo and Port-Novo used to bring presents to Ipokia because the people of Ipokia are the rightful owner of Osa river. Hence the cognomen;  Ipokia Omo Agbosa ma de.
  • Before Ipokia was founded, there was no Osa river then but low river and erosion gully.

  •  For the above reasons all farmers in the town decided to cultivate large portion of land already allocated to Afonja for farming purposes. The farmers were happy because water is no more destroying their crops.

  •  God bless Governor Amosun for the judicious use of the land for the benefit of Nigerians and the people beyond.
