A High Court in Rivers State, on Thursday, sentenced a 58 -year-old man to two years in prison for sexually abusing his 10 years old daughter. Tribune online reports.
The man, who had been on trial for about five years, was convicted of incest, which was a punishable offence by law.
The convict, Mr John Ufoegbu, was charged to court on January 10, 2011, for sexually abusing his biological daughter, Miss Ebubechukwu Ufoegbu.
The court presided by Justice Adolphus Enebeli, sentenced him to two years in prison, having spent five years already before the verdict.
Delivering his judgment, Justice Enebeli ,stated that the act was a pathetic case of sexual act between father and daughter, adding that it was not just only a case of molestation.
The court said that the pitiable aspect of the case was that it involved a child, stressing that it was disgraceful.
Enebeli said that the society needs to protect the child’s vulnerability to sexual abuse, adding that such act was punishable under Rivers State Child Act, 2010.
He disclosed that the child was defiled by virtue of father –child relationship, adding that evidences given by the victim were eyebrows rising.
The judge stated that Mr Ofoegbu had violated natural law by luring his own daughter into a hotel room and having canal knowledge of her, while also stressing that the act had thrown the little girl into long -term psychological trauma.
