Who's the next Onipokia?

Whenever an Oba passes on,  the first thought that runs through the mind an average person is 'who steps into the shoes of the deceased Oba'. This is when those interested in the coveted stool start underground politics so as to be the next Oba.

The situation is not different in Ipokia as plots to take over the throne vacated by Oba Raufu Adeole has started secretly. A source told Village News.

It was gathered that barely two weeks after the Oba died, some individuals have been pressing buttons, in their desperate moves to become the next Onipokia.

Some were said to have started meeting and declaring their ambitions to some elders,  who they believe could influence decisions when the time comes to choose a candidate.

Village News learnt that the community leaders in Ipokia have not yet started talking about the succession plans as the three-month mourning period declared for the deceased Oba just lapsed.

In Ipokia, the Obaship is rotated among four ruling houses: Iwaye Sipaola, Iwaye Dodo, Iwaye Dapale and Iwaye Ikemo.

Village News findings revealed that the next ruling house to take over the stool is Iwaye Dodo as the late Oba Adeole was from Iwaye Sipaola.

Our correspondent gathered that Iwaye Sipaola is the 'mother' of all the four ruling houses in Ipokia as it gave birth to the remaining three ruling houses.

An impeccable source, who does not want his name in print said Iwaye Dodo came into being when Queen Aderinsola Orojo became the first and only female king Ipokia ever had.

Our source informed that Queen Orojo hailed from Iwaye Sipaola. She got married to Iwaye Dodo and that was why a ruling house was given to Dodo as Orojo became an Oba.

It was therefore revealed that "anybody who wants to claim being qualified for the throne from Iwaye Dodo must relate directly to Orojo by blood, saying the title belongs to Orojo and not everybody in Iwaye Dodo.

The source explained that a late king of Ipokia, Oba Otenibotemole, was a brother to Orojo, saying that was why he was installed as the Oba under Iwaye Dodo ruling house.

He added that "the Ogun State Chiefs Law recognises the male child as being superior to the female child when it comes to choosing an Obaship candidate."

The late Oba Raufu Adeole passed on November 13, 2016. All necessary burial rites have since been performed.

The Onipokia is a prominent Oba in Ogun and one of the highly recognized monarch n the ancient Yoruba race.

Some argued that the Onipokia was supposed to be the Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, a situation that once caused rancour among Yewa Obas.
